Noun [Lithuanian]

Etymology: Of unknown origin. Petersson connects the word to kedė́ti (“to burst”); according to Fraenkel, the basic meaning of the root underlying the words would have to be something along the lines of "splinter" or "chip". This is semantically untenable. Despite Buck, Latvian ķeda (“spindle”) is likely not related, instead being borrowed from Finno-Ugric (compare Estonian kedr (“id”)).
